Некоторые из моих читателей знают ЖЖ-юзера ammosov, который то ли занимается, то ли занимался стартапом в России, который использует операционную систему Google Android.

Аммосов даже долго ходил с юзерпиком, изображающим эмблему Андроида. Несколько месяцев назад Аммосов сказал, что Андроид заточен специально и чисто для сотовых телефонов, но вчера в диалоге у Маши Сергеевой я дал ссылку на Андроид на большом телевизоре с сет-топ боксом на MIPS-е. Android was intended to work as a platform for mobile devices, but the “phone” OS has expanded to products far beyond that scope. California-based MIPS Technologies is doing some amazing things to showcase how far Android can be pushed in non-smartphone areas. From netbooks to set-top boxes and entertainment devices, MIPS has built an Android-based framework that other companies can use to develop their products.

I met up with members of the company to learn more about what they have planned and see a few product demos. Below is a video showing Home Jinni ConnecTV, a concept set-top box that uses Android to control media device convergence.

From the meeting, I also gathered some other interesting information

* Though it takes extra work to enable Android on devices, MIPS utilizes it because it gives a virtualized platform that adds new features with fewer concerns about reliability. Consider that Microsoft has trouble with some applications because they cannot test every program across every operating system. Android “sandboxes things,” so the core functioning remains in tact when problems arise. If an application crashes, it does so “elegantly and you can quit a particular application and the rest of the machine is untouched.”

* Technology is already in place to have Android apps work on set-top boxes or netbooks using MIPS technology; it’s up to OEM’s to implement them. Therefore, a company could build an entertainment device designed for TV but have support to run media streaming apps like Pandora or Slacker Radio.

* While discussing trends and upcoming products, a MIPS employee suggested that at the next CES, there’s a possibility that we could see television sets with even more integration between apps and Android. Twitter support for commenting while watching TV, getting email notifications on-screen, or even using your Android phone as a remote.

(Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that dozens of the world's leading electronics companies introduced and demonstrated devices and technologies based on the popular MIPS® architecture during the recent International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Connected Digital Home and Portable Products

AllGo Systems announced it is working with MIPS and Tensilica to bring high-end media codec support with advanced multimedia features to MIPS-BasedTM AndroidTM platforms. At CES, AllGo demonstrated a UPnP/DLNA-based high-definition (HD) video streaming solution on a MIPS-BasedTM Sigma Designs Vantage 8654 platform running Android, and demonstrated with Tensilica multi-channel audio playback on a MIPS32® processor integrated with a Tensilica HiFi2 Audio DSP.

AMIMON announced that new wireless-ready HD televisions and wireless HDTV accessories launched by LG Electronics are based on its second generation chipset, AMN2120/2220, based on a MIPS core. The chipset enables robust, high-quality wireless 1080p 60Hz in the 5GHz unlicensed band, both in-room and in-between rooms through walls. Demonstrations of products using AMIMON's technology were offered at various locations during CES.

Blusens showed off the production version of its MIPS-Based Blubrain High Definition Home Entertainment Device that manages, plays and distributes audiovisual content to multiple devices using IP streaming via cable network or PLC. The device integrates a hard disk, HDTV prepared dual DVB-T tuner, NAS (Network Attached Storage), and video streaming either from the Internet, remotely from a PC or via the various AV connections. Blusens also said it has reached agreements with various content providers to include Video on Demand (VoD), Over The Top (OTT) video, IPTV content and more.

Broadcom introduced numerous MIPS-Based products during the show including the latest additions to its STB family of SoC solutions aimed at enabling service providers to cost-effectively expand IPTV services, such as networked DVR and IP video services, for client-server and low-cost standalone deployment models. Broadcom also extended its Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®) integrated product family with a new low-cost HD client STB SoC solution. When paired with a media server or IP gateway solution enabled by Broadcom technology, the new solution enables manufacturers to leverage Broadcom's connected home software suite and design to lead the deployment of whole-home connected entertainment services such as multi-room HD DVR.

Broadcom also announced the industry's first HD DTA cable STB SoC that combines HD video, an integrated 1GHz cable tuner and HDMI capabilities in an ultra-small form factor. Broadcom also announced digital terrestrial converter box SoC solutions for Japan's upcoming transition to DTV broadcast transmission, and its next generation DOCSIS®/Euro-DOCSISTM 3.0-based cable modem SoC solution. In addition, Broadcom announced support for the RVU Alliance's remote user interface (RUI) technology on its latest STB and DTV solutions, to enable multichannel television service providers to deliver high-quality content with a consistent user interface to RVU thin client devices throughout the connected home.

Cisco continued to generate momentum with its Flip VideoTM camcorders, announcing enormous growth in video usage over the past year. MIPS-Based Flip Video camcorders are pre-loaded with FlipShare software to enable easy organizing, editing and seamless uploading to Facebook VideoTM, MySpaceTM, YouTubeTM and other video sharing sites. The latest FlipShare software also provides mobile apps for iPhoneTM, Android and select BlackBerry phones, enabling users to access their Flip Video library on their mobile phone.

Home Jinni unveiled ConnecTVTM as the world's first social entertainment platform and media center for Android-based embedded systems. ConnecTV provides advanced content aggregation and search engine for Internet TV with the potential to bring content from thousands of sources to TV sets. ConnecTV's streaming and content discovery technology extends to media in a DLNATM home area network. ConnecTV was demonstrated on a MIPS-Based platform from Sigma Designs.

LG Electronics won a Best of Innovations 2010 for its 47-inch LCD HDTV Model 47LE9500 with Slim Full LED Backlight technology and NetCast Entertainment AccessTM. LG HDTVs with Netcast Entertainment Access enable viewers to access online content and services, and feature Netflix® instant streaming and Yahoo!® Widgets. Users can use Yahoo! Widgets to access content including weather, finance, news and other information.

In its own suite at CES, MIPS demonstrated the world's first Android STBs including a prototype of an Android-based IPTV STB developed by KDDI R&D Labs. Inc., a subsidiary company of Japanese telecommunications carrier KDDI. The set-top box supports IPTV set-top box functionality such as multicasting, video-on-demand (VOD), remote control user interface, and digital rights management (DRM) requirements. The prototype is based on the highly-integrated MIPS-Based SMP8654 media processors from Sigma Designs.

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America displayed its 3-D-ready projection TV, based on DLP technology. The new device displays 3-D content from a Blu-ray player. The 3-D adapter for the company's projection TV, developed by the engineers of Mitsubishi, reportedly consists of an HDMI 1.4 interface, video signaling circuitry, and Mitsubishi's homegrown ASIC based on MIPS core.

Motorola, Inc. Home & Networks Mobility business and Dolby Laboratories, Inc. announced that Dolby® Volume technology will be featured in Motorola's cable set-top portfolio for the North American and Latin American markets. Dolby Volume will be featured on Motorola's DCX family of STBs, featuring MIPS-Based technology. Dolby Volume allows consumers to control the volume level on their playback devices for consistency across commercials and channel changes.

NETGEAR announced the worldwide launch of its Digital Entertainer Express (EVA9100), a digital media player that leverages MIPS technology and enables consumers to stream personal digital media collections and Internet content over home networks to high-definition televisions. The Digital Entertainer Express adds to the NETGEAR family of Internet-connected set-top boxes, including the Digital Entertainer Elite (EVA9150), which also leverages MIPS technology.

Sigma Designs showcased a number of new MIPS-Based technologies at the show, including a cable hybrid DOCSIS gateway, a low-cost media player platform, premium Blu-ray players, PC connectivity products, Android on a high-definition panel, and a range of new 3D technologies for next-generation 3DTVs, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. Sigma also joined with Western Mediabridge to introduce world's first commercially available Android STB.

Additionally, Sigma demonstrated and announced availability of the NeoVueTM transmitter/receiver platform designed to wirelessly transport audio/video and texts from notebooks or netbooks and display them in 1080p on a HDTV. The NeoVue platform includes both a transmitter with a USB dongle, based on Sigma's CoairTM wireless chipset. Sigma Designs also announced a partnership with SoftAtHome to deliver the SoftAtHome Operating Platform for hybrid, terrestrial and IP STBs on the Sigma Designs SMP8654 chipset. The MIPS-Based SMP8654 reportedly enables rapid and cost-effective development of next generation hybrid-IPTV STBs.

Syabas, makers of the award-winning MIPS-Based Popcorn Hour C-200 digital media player, introduced the Popbox, a small, $129 open platform set-top box that streams music, movies, photos, games, social media updates and more to HDTVs. Popbox supports a broad range of audio and video file types and recognizes content from the Internet, a personal computer and a USB-attached storage device such as an HD camcorder or an external hard drive. Syabas also announced that it has added a number of new content and application partners including Netflix, Twitter, FunSpot, Crunchyroll and SHOUTcast.

Tensilica showcased its leading-edge audio, video and baseband communication IP cores, including the popular HiFi 2 Audio Engine running on the Android platform in collaboration with MIPS. MIPS and Tensilica recently announced they are leveraging their integrated solution to accelerate SoC design activity on the Android platform.

VUDU Inc. announced it has extended its distribution as an embedded platform to include broadband home theaters, HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players from LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Samsung Electronics Co. Inc., SANYO Manufacturing Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Toshiba America Consumer Products L.L.C. and VIZIO. In addition, the new VUDU Apps applications platform will be available on broadband HDTVs from Mitsubishi, SANYO, Sharp and Toshiba and on broadband Blu-ray Disc players from Toshiba. The VUDU box leverages technology from MIPS.

Yahoo! Inc. announced it is globally expanding availability of its Yahoo! Widget Engine by working with companies including MIPS Technologies and Sigma Designs. Yahoo!'s goal is to dramatically increase availability of the Yahoo! Widget Engine, delivering compelling TV Widget experiences to more televisions and other consumer electronic devices.

Zoran demonstrated a number of new MIPS-Based products and technologies. The company's SupraHD® Full HDTV solutions for mainstream flat panel DTV markets in North America, Europe and Asia feature new video and audio features and streaming capabilities. Zoran also demonstrated SupraXD® and SupraTV® STB solutions for worldwide satellite and cable set top markets, new COACH-based digital camera designs supporting stills, HD 720P and HD 1080P video capture for the next generation of major brand digital cameras, and VaddisHDTM High Definition Multimedia Processor platforms supporting Blu-ray, DVD and HD media players.

Leading up to the show, Zoran also announced that its VaddisHD processor enables playback of HD video in JVC's new HD media player. Shipping now in the U.S., Europe and Asia, the media player enables consumers to play their HD camcorder (AVCHD) content on any television set. With an integrated dual processor and audio DSP, Zoran's VaddisHD processor enables advanced applications through its multi-standard decoding for high definition video.

Portable Products

Leading up to CES, Broadcom introduced its next-generation Crystal HD solution that leverages MIPS technology and provides consumers with advanced, low-cost, low-power, HD video playback on a netbook. The new Broadcom BCM70015 single chip Crystal HD enhanced media accelerator solution aims to break down netbook cost and power barriers to provide an exceptional HD video experience. Broadcom announced that its Crystal HD technology will be available to OEMs wanting to deliver 'best-in-class' video playback on the new Intel® AtomTM processor platform for netbooks. Crystal HD technology will be featured on select 2010 netbook platforms from OEMs including Asus, Dell and Samsung.

In its own suite at CES, MIPS demonstrated the Lemote YeeLoong8089 netbook computer running Android, with browser capability and other applications. According to Lemote, the YeeLoong8089, powered by a MIPS-Based Loongson processor, is the world's first laptop that contains completely free software. MIPS also demonstrated a MIPS-Based netbook from Foxlink, featuring NetLogic's Alchemy® Au1250® processor.

NetLogic Microsystems demonstrated over two dozen customer systems using its ultra low-power Alchemy processors. The demonstrations targeted a variety of embedded applications such as automotive in-vehicle infotainment, telematics, audio/video navigation, enterprise thin clients and other media-rich applications. NetLogic's MIPS-Based product demos included electronic dictionary solutions from Sharp Electronics; enterprise thin client solutions from ChipPC that offer the world's lowest power desktop at just 3W operating and unique miniature form factors; media players from iStation, Top Eight and Cowon; digital signage solutions from TenHZ, netbooks from Skytone and Foxlink; NetTV solutions from TECO; personal navigation devices from MobileAppliances; in-vehicle infotainment systems from LG Electronics, Continental Automotive and Tinnos and Samwell; and a broad range of 3D, audio/video and multimedia automotive navigation systems. NetLogic also showcased a cloud-computing touch-screen multi-entertainment and information platform running on AndroidTM from Carpo Holding AG; as well as D2 Technologies' VoIP and IP communications for Android media phones.

The PSP®go from Sony Electronics was honored in the CES Innovations Awards. The most portable PlayStation® Portable system to-date, the MIPS-Based PSPgo lets users download immersive digital gaming, movies and TV shows directly to the 16GB hard drive. Users can also browse PSP gaming and movie content from the PlayStation Network and use built-in Bluetooth® support to connect a wireless headset and talk with friends via Skype®.

E-book readers were also a big trend at CES. Australia-based Ubiq Technologies reportedly plans to launch its new Quokkapad e-book reader this month. According to the company, the product is "Based on MIPS32 architecture for high performance," with code compression that "allows designers to reduce the memory requirements for their application by as much as 40 percent."

Networking, Storage and Enterprise

Broadcom announced a new line of scalable 802.11n router solutions. With the new Intensi-fi® XLR SoC solutions, Wi-Fi system OEMs can reportedly leverage unparalleled silicon integration to reduce overall cost while maintaining adequate multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) performance for streaming HD video throughout the home.

Celeno Communications announced availability of its second generation 802.11n chipset that manufacturers and OEMs can leverage to enable residential gateways, multimedia home routers, STBs, DVRs, networked TVs, wireless HDMI bridges and other consumer electronics devices with wire-like HD video distribution throughout the home. The CL1800 SoC incorporates a powerful MIPS processor, and reportedly quadruples the video throughput/range combination of typical 802.11n systems, reaching over 120Mbps of video throughput at the edge of the home with zero packet errors.

Entropic Communications announced that its field-proven home networking chipset, based on the MoCA standard, was selected by Pace Americas for its NAS device. The device is part of Pace's new advanced multiroom DVR solution, Home Content Sharing (HCS). Pace's HCS utilizes centralized storage to connect multiple HD STBs within the home. Entropic also announced that its third-generation, MoCA 1.1 compliant, single chip solution, the EN2510, received a 2009 TMCnet.com Cable Product of the Year Award from Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC). The MIPS-Based solution is designed to enable a robust network solution using existing coaxial wiring to distribute HD video, music, pictures and internet content throughout the home.

Entropic also joined with Wistron NeWeb to showcase the WNC 4-Port Ethernet-to-Coax Bridge (ECB) using MoCA home networking technology. The WNC 4-Port MoCA Bridge makes it possible to connect an entire home theater to the Internet using existing coax cable. In its booth, Entropic also showed off a range of other products incorporating its MIPS-Based MoCA technology, including STBs from Cisco, Motorola, and Sigma Designs; Verizon FIOS equipment from Actiontec, Alcatel, Motorola, and Westell; a digital video server from Motorola and more.

Ikanos Communications and AricentTM introduced a production-ready platform for advanced next-generation broadband access products. By combining Aricent's software with Ikanos' MIPS-Based Fusiv® Vx180 communications processor, the companies aim to enable service providers and network equipment manufacturers to rapidly deliver next-generation access devices that support the evolving multimedia, telephony and storage requirements of the digital home. Aricent's software for WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) reportedly integrates seamlessly with Ikanos' Fusiv processors to enable a unified platform for advanced wireless broadband access devices including mobile broadband routers and femtocell base stations.

Ralink Technology demonstrated a range of new wireless technologies, and announced sample availability of the RT3883 SoC and RT3593 client chips, reportedly the industry's first commercially available single-chip 450Mbps 802.11n access point and station solutions with beam forming technology. The RT3883 features three dual band 2.4/5GHz radios, a 500MHz MIPS32 74K® CPU core, and a variety of connectivity interfaces. It is reportedly the most advanced Wi-Fi access point/router platform in the industry.

Ralink also joined with Sigma Designs to cooperatively announce availability of 802.11n WiFi-enabled reference designs to enable rapid deployment of wirelessly networked consumer electronic products including networked media players, Blu-ray players and more. Using Ralink's 802.11n ICs, and Sigma's SMP865x media processing SoCs, the reference designs reportedly deliver outstanding HD video performance with guaranteed Quality-of-Service (QoS) over the home wireless Local Area Network (LAN).

Samsung Electronics selected NetLogic Microsystems' MIPS-Based Alchemy Au1250 processor to power its industry-leading SP-L305 networked video projector for enterprises and small/midsized businesses. NetLogic showcased the SP-L305 projector at the show.

Понимаю вашу привязанность к MIPS, но:

MIPS - это черная метка индустрии. Многие, кто связывался с архитектурой MIPS, уже нас покинули: DEC, SiliconGraphics, Pyramid, Nixdorf... Все они пытались работать с MIPS архитектурой. Насчет широкого распространения MIPS в телевизорах - это вы телевизоры Sony имеете ввиду? Это единственный кастомер, а не широкое распространение. Остальные-то сидят на арме, а сейчас пересядут на Intel.
Широкое распространие MIPS IP в качестве основы произвольных SoC тоже вызывает сомнение - что такого продоставлет мипс, что перебило бы замечательные тулы тенсилики, арма или арка? Да хотя бы тот же NIOS SoPC Builder от Альтера?

MIPS Technologies comfortably holds the number one market position in devices that require a mix of heavy multimedia processing and connectivity: digital TVs; cable, satellite and IPTV set-top boxes; Blu-ray Disc players; DVD players and digital video recorders. Historically, ARM tends to have the smallest, lowest-power processors, whereas MIPS tends to excel in high performance. To some extent, those tendencies reflect the history of each company. Almost from the start, ARM focused on embedded systems, whereas MIPS originally focused on workstations and servers.

Lately, ARM has been reaching toward higher performance, because that is where ARM’s biggest market (mobile phones) is going. Meanwhile, MIPS is migratingtoward lower power, because that’s where its biggest market (consumer electronics) is going. At the same time, both companies fear encroachment by the x86, because mobility is where Intel’s biggest market (personal computing) is going.

For the harried engineers at ARM, MIPS, and Intel, life is getting tougher. But it’s good news for chip designers, who are getting more and better choices. Embedded-processor cores are growing more powerful and power efficient. The MIPS M14K and M14Kc are arriving hot on the heels of the ARM Cortex-A5 and Tensilica’s new Xtensa LX3 and Xtensa 8 (which MPR will cover soon). Another competitor, ARC International, was recently acquired by Virage Logic, which can offer one-stop shopping for SoC designers. (See MPR 9/14/09-01, “Summer Shopping Spree.”)

The M14K and M14Kc processors—and, especially, the microMIPS ISA—move MIPS Technologies in a direction the company needs to go. They are worthwhile upgrades from existing MIPS processors and the MIPS32 ISA. They will strengthen MIPS’s competitive position against ARM, its strongest foe.

Правда статья Дворака - не более чем лирика, он не объяснил, почему индустрия в полном составе поверила интел, а не DEC или MIPS? и почему после не оправдавшего самых радужных надежд дебюта итаниума не произошло передела HPC рынка? Наверное Дворак чего-то не договаривает.

Прочитал о M14K - 0.2мм/10mW/21 clk per IRQ/ARM AHB sysbus - неплохо, посмотрим как сложится судьба девайса. ARM-то уже не столько CPU IP продает, сколько SoC платформы. Его одной только меньшей на 10% площадью/мощностью не перешибешь. А так - AHB SoC, и что там в качестве контроллера ставить - вопрос текущих предпочтений.
